There's a little group of isles beyond the wave

First, a completely cool trailer for Die Hard 4. I will consider my life incomplete until I have seen this film.

Second, I got a leaflet through my letterbox this morning. A leaflet asking me to vote for the BNP in the next local Assembly elections. Yes, the British National Party are trying to target the Welsh-speaking communities. (For the uninitiated, the BNP is extreme right politics. Like Jean Marie Le-Pen but less cute and fluffy. Or like George W. Bush but less ... er, yeah.) Permit me to quote you some stuff from it:

Vote British National Party.
Angry about the flood of Eastern European labour driving down wages, putting Welsh workers on the dole, pricing youngsters out of rented homes and breaking up our communities?

Yeah, damn those Eastern European scum. Hate them so much. But really, they're "pricing youngsters out of rented homes"? So what are the people from Northern England moving to live in Llandudno doing? Camping?

Now's your chance to do something about it. Because we agree with you.

Sweet. I like people agreeing with me. How interesting that we both have radical, racist, right-wing views. Oh, wait.

North Wales #1 Candidate [sic] Ennys Hughes. [She says:] "I am very concerned about the future of our country.

What a breathtakingly contentious statement. Here, have some prozac. Calm down those revolutionary statements, there.

The significant changes which have taken place in recent years, with the influx of large numbers of immigrants are [sic] causing widespread disquiet."

The quite awesome display of grammatical nous, and the tautology of immigrants influxing anywhere (rather than what? immigrating somewhere else?), is actually causing me rather more "disquiet".

"I am concerned about the threat to the survival of the Welsh language from unlimited immigration."

OK, hold the water-bound vessel here. BNP? Concerned about the survival of Welsh? Um, fine, but let me just check what they're saying on the other side of the leaflet here ... ah, here we are:

BNP, unlike the other parties, won't "[k]eep using taxpayers' money to fund Politically Correct multiculturalism."

...

So, you, Ms Ennys Hughes, are pro Welsh language but anti "multiculturalism"? Help me out a bit here. Is everyong in the UK going to start learning Welsh, then? So we can all live in a lovely monocultural bilingual society? Yes, Britain, that single race, single culture entity which has never had immigrants or radical culture co-existence, ever. Ace!

More balls, please.

Ooh, and I love that they've put this "PS" at the end:

Don't be conned by UKIP [UK Independence Party] either. Their leaders have used cheap Polish labour to do up their mansions.

Yeah, and they haven't held any race-hate rallies or formed concentration camps or anything. Poofs.

life, politics
