A rant about gross people in Supernatural fandom

Feb 06, 2014 14:53

So now that the Sam is a big old meanie for not being nicer to Dean has taken hold, the next wave of why Dean was right and Sam was wrong is starting. This post, by the author of Dean Winchester Protector or Abuser is campaigning for why Sam put in perspective Gad killing Kevin in Sam's body. The argument goes that yes Kevin was killed but Gad ( Read more... )

THEY'RE SO GROSS! I am honestly enjoying watching them get smoked out like this. CRY MORE.

I mean, I do think that the Kevin/Cas/Charlie/&c question can have some place in the conversation? But more because they can't butterfly-effect things that have already happened, and they really can't do it selectively - ie, it's just more evidence that the deciding factor should've been Sam's wishes rather than shoulda-coulda-wouldas on effect.

OMG did you see her follow-up to "Dean's not abusive because he says he's not abusive" post? And how she accused ME of cherry-picking and bad faith? LMAO.

I can't say I'm enjoying it, but it is making very clear to me which people I cannot have on my daily reading list any more. We're all blinded by our fannish crushes, but there's a point at which gross is the only word for it.

Yes, this is showing the divides in fandom. There are people I followed that I don't any more and names I jump over on review boards because I know we don't see things the same way.

I'm finding it such a relief because this stuff bothered me since my first watch through the show? But I was mostly discussing it with f-listers from other fandoms who were really not thinking critically about Supernatural and therefore falling unthinkingly into the abuse apologia. And so it was really hard for me to trust my own instincts even as I was watching it through and writing it out. Now that it's not even subtle, I'm actually a lot more comfortable.

UGH, I'm so sick of all the bashing, I really am. I sometimes wonder if the writers/PTB do this sort of thing on purpose, feeding the whole Sam vs. Dean fighting in fandom. I guess not, but whenever episodes like this happen I cringe thinking of all the fighting in fandom that's bound to occur. I'm especially sick of all the "Sam is a meanie, he should have been nicer to Dean, GTFO Sam, you don't deserve to be surrounded by the same oxygen molecules as Dean" BS.

I'm pretty much like you are in respect to Cas.

his worth is judged not by who he is but by how useful he is to characters that fandom deems worthy

THIS. This is what frustrates the heck out of me as well.

And what is this idea of Sam being ready to die? If he was so ready to die, why doesn't he kill himself now?OMG seriously??? Yeah, some parts of fandom really need to grow up. I've started scaling back my involvement. I still post little reviews and sometimes I'll comment on other people's reviews/thoughts, but I do it a lot less than I used to. I just don't have the ( ... )

I'm hiding more and more in journals and communities where people share my views. Fandom is getting really polarized out there and probably will be until they settle the rift between Sam and Dean. Even then, the intense fans are very polarized and it will be a real trick to have both sides be content with whatever resolution the writers come up with.

I'm sick of them all too. I'm trying not to fight on TWFB because it's not fair on Alice, but I want to shake them and tell them to stop being so frigging juvenile

I told myself to stay away from WFB, but I admit I peeked. I don't know what's up there. They are embracing some very controversial opinions and language in reviews, but insisting that everyone play nicely in the comments. That's hard to maintain. :(

I don't get why Sam is supposed to tread on eggshells because Dean had a messed-up childhood ( ... )

I have not be invested in the brothers relationship for a while precisely because of this type of thing. I want one where Sam is recognized as a person in his own right and not something that displays how far Dean will go to save him and does that not make Dean awesome. I do not want this brothers relationship as it is currently perserved at any price.
Sadly if people can get more up in arms over what Sam said than what Dean did to him then I cannot see Sam ever being allowed that regardless of where Carver and Co intend going with this relationship.

Sam was mean to Dean so many cannot see past that .

Amen to that! If they go back to the idea that "I gotta take care of my widdle Sammeee" is great- then it might be the time that I'm done with Show

I'm really hoping this ends up with Sam finally getting say in his life and becoming an equal partner. pocochina has me holding out hope that the writers are finally going to deal with the imbalance of power between Sam and Dean. So I'm going to hope that they stick to that and not cave to the Sam is so mean to Dean that he must do only what Dean wants. I'm with you, if this ends up with Dean is 100% right and Sam must grovel, I will be done.

Yeah, I *never* thought I would ever say that I'd be done with Show before it stopped airing, but if they say that Dean's violation of Sam is okay- that will be it for me. There is no way I could continue after that.
