You know the cancer you eventually get better from? Well, that ain't the kind of cancer I got.

I took in the Watchmen Director's Cut on Blu-Ray the other night. Despite being lengthened to a bum-numbing three hours I thought it was a great improvement on the theatre version. Many scenes were given an extra beat to breathe and more of Alan Moore's fabulous dialogue made it on-screen. It does a more complete job of weaving the fable together.

In this longer form there are many small pleasures to enjoy, and some of the best of them are where Snyder goes 'off piste' and ignores the comic. One such example is the death of Hollis--the original Nite Owl--where he is seen to relive his glory days of the '40s as the Top Knots beat him down.

I understand there's an Ultimate Edition on the way that will splice in half an hour of Black Freighter animation.

This movie is a rather insane indulgence--a thing of obsession--and I have to confess I really, really dig it.

Oh, and I also seem to be the only person in the universe that likes Matthew Goode's archly fey Ozymandias. Far better than the rather stiff suit that he's portrayed as in the comic.
