so the tmbg concert on friday night was super fun. they really do give an amazing performance, which is why i try to see them every time i can. their new album that they're touring for, "the else," is not their best work. it's a good solid album, but they certainly haven't stretched themselves this time. it can't compare to "apollo 18," or even "the spine." it feels like they kinda phoned this one in. however, if you buy the actual hard copy of the cd it comes with a bonus cd of all the songs they've had on their podcasts, called "cast your pod to the wind." and some of THOSE songs are amazing. so, it's a win overall i would say. and like i said, they are wonderful in concert. so much fun!

the opening band was called oppenheimer, and they had me hooked from their first song. after their set i immediately went to buy their album at the merch table. they're from belfast, ireland, and they are super polite boys who thanked us for applauding after every song. so cute. the drummer is the lead singer, and the guitarist/keyboardist sings into a robo-voice synth thingie, which is super cool. their sound is like the postal service only more rocking out. it's amazing! i have been listening to their cd on repeat.

the newest rilo kiley cd is so much fun. such a huge departure in style from all their previous stuff. the music is so totally different, and jenny lewis gets to really stretch her vocals, and her voice is beautiful. their songs are catchy and fun to sing along with, and seriously the music is so great. however, the lyrics are not what i have come to expect from this band. they are, to put it mildly, lightweight. i mean, here's an example:

hooray hooray
I'm your silver lining
hooray hooray
but now I'm gold

it would be mean of me to compare the lyrics on this album to a band like switchfoot. mean, but accurate. i am used to some really interesting stories and metaphors from this band, and this album just does not deliver on that level. however, the new sound and the beauty of jenny's voice still make it very listenable.

so to recap, go out and buy oppenheimer!

activities, music
