River laughs when Simon drops the egg and dye splashes everywhere. She is so graceful carrying the eggs, her slender fingers cradling them like the baby chicks they could have been. "Where are your motor skills? Where is your coordination?" she asks her brother, frowning at him, turning his hands over and over in hers, searching. "You used to be a doctor."
Wash finds the colored eggs leaning precariously against the plastic palm trees on the console and smiles. Captain Reynolds is not so amused, his gun replaced in its holster with the best of River's finely-dyed creations. "I will not have your crazy sister turnin' my ship into a gorram holiday carnival!" he says to Simon, encroaching upon Simon's personal space as he is wont to do when he is angry.
Simon backs away, against the wall, apologizing although he doesn't know why. "It's just a harmless bit of fun, Captain. When River and I lived at home, every spring we would dye eggs and hide them through the house. Finding them was like a prize. Her doing this, remembering this, makes me feel like there's hope."
Captain Reynolds looks like he is about to relent when they hear Kaylee squeal from the engine room. "Shiny! Cap'n, look!" She comes out, waving an egg that is dyed a perfect strawberry pink. "Ain't it the prettiest thing you've ever seen?"
"This?" Captain Reynolds leans in closer to Simon. "This is what I'm talkin' about. If your sister is distractin' my mechanic from her job, takin' care of the ship, then we may have a problem."
River, a welcome interruption, comes dancing through the hallway, struggling as Simon grabs her wrist and pulls her aside. "There was a rabbit," she protests, her eyes wide. "I didn't leave the eggs. It was the rabbit."
Captain Reynolds shoots Simon a look that says he's mighty close to just leaving both of them to fend for themselves on the next planet they come to.
Jayne's look doesn't have to say anything at all, because he comes screaming and swearing down the hallway, yelling that he's just sat on a ruttin' egg and that it's about time for River to meet Vera.
River just smiles and gives him another egg.
Simon sighs. Happy Easter indeed.
