Summary: Pepper lies awake night after night, waiting for her Iron Knight to return to her.
Pepper lay naked and alone in the king-size bed, feeling quite lost and very aware that their was no other presence to hold or comfort her. She lay on her side, close to the left edge of the bed with the blankets pulled around her. She gripped them tightly, trying to pretend that the one that she wanted most was with her, but it was no use. A blanket was a poor substitute for Tony.
He had gone out on a mission two days earlier and Pepper had had to endure sleepless nights of fear and worry without him. There had been no word from Tony or Rhodey in that time, and it was pointless asking JARVIS because he had been ordered not to say anything that would cause her distress. She often believed that that was an error on Tony’s part because JARVIS rarely said anything regarding Iron Man’s situation whenever Pepper asked, and that made her worry all the more.
Pepper rolled over and looked at the digital clock for the current time. It read 3.48am. She would have to be at Stark Industries for a meeting at 8am, though she doubted that she would be able to stay awake throughout. This would be her second night of little sleep. At least during the day she had something to occupy her mind and keep her from worrying as much, but when the working day was done and lights went out, she was left alone with her thoughts and anxieties. She closed her eyes once more, but sleep would not come. Instead she saw vision upon vision of Tony fighting for his life in various situations, and often being seriously hurt or worse.
It was some time later when she heard the soft creak of the bedroom door. Her stomach muscles clenched with surprise and relief. He was home. She couldn’t see him moving around in the darkness, but she could hear him. He was trying to be quiet; he probably thought that she was asleep. How could he think that she could sleep knowing that he was out on mission? He should have known by then that she couldn’t sleep until she knew that he was safe in their bed and curled up behind her.
Her fear kept her wide awake. The fear of not knowing what was going on; the fear of not knowing what was happening to him; the fear that he might get killed and not return. It scared her more than anything. Hearing his movements in their bedroom wasn’t enough. She needed to feel his arms around her before she could truly believe that he was there.
She felt the bed dip beside her and she only had to wait a few seconds before she could feel the warmth of his body next to hers. As his left arm draped over her and pulled her close, a tear escaped her eye and ran down her cheek, dropping gently onto the pillow. She sniffed a little, trying to stifle the other tears of relief that were threatening to fall. She took his hand as it rested on her stomach, gripping it tightly as if she were afraid that he might disappear.
She sniffed again, which made him pull her closer. He began to gently kiss her shoulder, his lips making a kissing trail across her collarbone and up her neck. His beard felt scratchy and untidy, but it felt like heaven to Pepper as it was more evidence that he was alright. As his lips reached her ear, he whispered “Don’t cry, Pepper. Please don’t cry,” which was followed by more gentle kisses.
He raised her up slightly so that he could slide his other arm around her. He knew that she had been worried and he knew that despite the bruises and cuts that he had endured over the past couple of days, she needed to be held and she needed to be assured. He was tired and sore, but he would assure her in the best way that he knew how.
He released his hand from her almost death-like grip and began to slide it over her skin, caressing her gently with his callused hands. It was almost therapeutic; the sensation of rough skin on smooth. He felt that all the danger, the adrenalin rushes and the pain was being drawn away from him, simply by being in her presence. She felt so soft and as his hands roamed over her body, he felt himself becoming hard.
He continued to kiss and caress, making her emit sighs of pleasure. He chuckled inwardly when she took hold of one of his hands and began to guide it around her body, leading it to the places where she wanted to be touched. When his hands found the most intimate part of her body, he found that she was ready for him. Positioning himself at her opening, he gently pushed himself inside her and completed the connection between them.
Pepper gasped at the feeling of him inside her and it was then that she knew that her fears had been unfounded. He was alive and he was with her, and he was not going to let her go without a fight. His hands continued to roam her body as they moved together, their energies mingling and creating sparks to form a much bigger fire. The sparks began to ignite sparks of their own, until a chain reaction was set in motion, sending Tony and Pepper spiraling out of control to their mutual release - Pepper first, and then Tony soon behind.
Tony panted, his bruised body protesting to the sexual activity that he had engaged in. He chose to ignore it for the moment, enjoying the fluttering sensation of Pepper contracting around him. He held her tightly, kissing her softly and whispering words of love in her ear. Pepper slid an arm around his neck, pulling his mouth to hers for a long, passionate kiss. Her fears had been fought back for the time being with words and actions of love.
