Illusion of Control

No spankings this week for me. I'm on time, and on my best behaviour (relative to the PMR standard of behaviour though). I actually wanted to share a funny link this week that I got sent - Straw Feminists - a hilarious take on the Straw Man argument technique. The comic is a hilarious depiction of the notion that all feminists are ball breaking ( Read more... )

the psychology of violence, ch & svm is not so amateur, vampire politics = drama, mine.mine.mine.mine.mine, intolerance and bigotry, all rhodes lead to atd, demon desmond cataliades, you just got deadlocked, happily ever afters 'n' such, sparse truth & rarish lies, let's talk dead reckoning, the fellowship of the sun, disability or quirk or power, sookie stackhouse - 28, i thinked about svm today

Gah! How can I keep up when you keep writing things? Arrange yourself to suit my schedule, immediately!

That cartoon was hilarious. I've never been called a ball breaking bitch though, the worst I've been called is an empty-headed idealist :D

You're so right about the ignoring of people with disabilities. Earlier this year, the only wheel chair access at the law school was closed for a week. Whenever I mentioned it to people who I thought would care (and they did), they were shocked. But... they all go to the same law school I do, and in fact I saw them walk past the ramp when it was covered in scaffolding. And I know for sure I would have been completely oblivious too if I wasn't pushing a pram around, which makes you more aware of where the ramps are.

You've written about the 'Just World Fallacy' before, but I liked your explanation of confirmation bias, it's so true! Sookie does so many more things right than she does wrong, but no one remarks on that.

Lol at 'put on their big girl panties', you have a memory like an elephant for Sookie slights :D

Well, I would, but you haven't forwarded me a schedule. Lol. But I promise, I won't remove it in a week, so it'll still be there.

I tell you - mention you're a feminist some places, and they think they should get some sort of anti-ball-stealing device. I loved the way they hissed personally. :D

I think it's just that people just don't consider it - it's too difficult for them to really think about it. I also think that while lots of dialogues have opened up about the way we treat women, or minority races, there's *very* little discussion to do with disabled people. Well meaning people still say insensitive and stupid things.

No - no one much remarks on what Sookie does right. You can find pages and pages of diatribe about how she's doing it wrong, and few times when she's praised for doing it right. It's a real shame that people focus on the failures rather than the successes.

That particular slight I remember really well because of a synopsis of a fanfic said something like Sookie only got tortured with Neave and Lochlan because she didn't "pull her big girl panties up" and engage them in conversation. Because they totally cared what Sookie thought, apparently. If she could have tricked them into 2 hours worth of conversation, Eric would have saved her. Which is insulting bullcrap - and probably written by someone who thinks the guys at Abu Ghraib were just pussies who didn't think to learn English and persuade their captors not to torture them.
