One of the things I've always liked about the fantasy genre, is that while murder mysteries and romances deal with just the story and the (sometimes false) world in that universe, fantasy offers the opportunity for asking some bigger questions, and thinking about abstract concepts. Vampires in particular - as one of my favoured genres - offers much ( Read more... )

Thank you! That's exactly what I've been trying to explain to some Bill fans I know, but wasn't eloquent enough to do it ( ... )

You know, I've been thinking about this post and what I wrote earlier and I have a little more to add. I might go off on a little tangent here, so I apologize in advance. Feel free to ignore me ( ... )

No problems. :D

I think that Eric is the most suited for Sookie, not that he's necessarily the best. I've been thinking about writing a post about that, actually, on how Eric fits Sookie but that doesn't necessarily mean he's the best guy in the world - it's just his faults fit nicely in with Sookie's.

I'm all for the idea that men are imperfect. It would be so much harder for me to justify leaving my bras on the floor where I take them off for the last 16 years if my husband was perfect. I would feel like shit, honestly. :D

Oooh - I do love that quote.

I think the Eric fangirls always set themselves up to be disappointed by the books - he will never be the romantic fantasy hero.

I like Eric - book Eric, and I always think that some part of him is removed when he's dumbed down - or even worse when Sookie's bashed to accept him wholly. I like that she has problems with Eric in her head. I like that he is a problem. He fascinates me because he isn't bland, and I think making him nicer makes him more bland - fanfic Eric fails when he doesn't make me think.

Anyway, another point I want to raise is about Sam. As I said before none of Sookie's suitors are not perfect, not even close. They are not even nice guys most of the time. So why didn't I mention Sam? For one, he isn't a suitor. Never was. Sookie doesn't consider him one, so I don't either. And that is my point! So, poor Sookie doesn't have a choice of good guys as her suitors, but she good have a really nice guy as her suitor if she wanted. Sam has always been willing and ready, if she ever wanted him. So, why does Sookie refuses to even consider a great guys as her partner and settles for some really complicated one? She says she wants a normal life, a husband, a life in the sun, children and seem to never want to leave Bons Temps and even her job at Merlotte's. What would be more perfect than dating Sam to reach that dream? He would be the perfect choice for that. But she doesn't even consider him. She says that he is her boss and that's it. But to me that's just an excuse. Come on, if she had a prestigious career that was in ( ... )

I don't know that Sam was ever a possibility - but I think it was the fact that she was alone in feeling like a freak for 5 years in Sam's company. He must have watched her struggle, but he never did anything about it until Bill came to town. For a girl that leapt wholeheartedly on Bill's difference and his resulting acceptance of her, that was something that put a real barrier between her and Sam ( ... )

Ooooh, you make an excellent point. I hadn't consider that.

I had thought about why Sam had never asked Sookie out before Bill showed up and that always bugged me. That made me feel that he doesn't actually like her that much, since he only made a move when someone else wanted her, you know? But I get what you're saying about Sookie's feelings and it makes total sense. Sam is a weird character. He is a really nice guy, but he dates awful women and he was an ass in not asking Sookie out before Bill and not telling her the truth about himself when he could see she felt like a freak. He is definitely not the man for her. Plus, let's face it, lion or not, he's super boring. ;)

It always bugged me too that he never asked her out until someone else was interested in her. I mean, take Bill out of the equation, and Sookie might have really died alone as a virgin, because Sam certainly wasn't doing anything about it.

Lol - he is a perfect friend - he's non-threatening and non-aggressive for the most part, and certainly when it comes to Sookie, he gives her what she needs, makes up for the slack of Eric, who fails at some stuff like taking Sookie out to dinner.
