Except, the problem is that they still have Godric being as sweet as a little pie to Eric - he's not hurting him, he's exhorting him to do bad things to others. Like a seductive evil person, rather than the narcissistic sadist Appius was. He would still have ended up creating more of a monster than Eric is - and while it scared Amnesiac Eric, he was hardly that man when he was turned. Eric prior to being turned saw his friends meet their deaths and begged for immortality from that same death dealer. And he was filled with vengeance enough to sustain him a thousand years. He wasn't child-like and apologetic. At that point, not being able to see the Sun in Sookie's hair is enough to depress Eric; while human Eric had seen the death of his family and was angry about it.
Book Appius is more like Franklin - the psychopath who's overly concerned with himself, but way more cold than Franklin. Even after a thousand years, Eric both cares for him and fears him, whereas Show Eric seems only to love Godric, and not fear him. Even as far back as the 1940's, Godric was nice to Eric - he didn't "watch him like a 7/11 clerk watches a customer who may have a gun."
And Show Sookie is an idiot, unlike Book Sookie. :D
