The Making of Eric: Appius v. Godric

I've sort of covered this subject in my fics, but it's something that really bothers me when I see it creeping out of the TB section, and into the SVM section because it's easier to write Godric. Frankly, that's why I don't read much TB fic - the fundamental problems undercutting the foundation of Eric's character. You want easy nonsensical ( Read more... )

travails of the svm fandom, the psychology of violence, ch & svm is not so amateur, family reunion from hell ditf, tb - the other white meat, the mythology of rape 101, eric northman the lover, rants of the fanficy flavour, o'kelly or appius livius ocella, sookie stackhouse - 28, i thinked about svm today

TB Eric is a big stumbling block, with regards to his past. They *can* probably fix it, but I don't think they're going to - they have that "Whereever I go there will always be women" shit to explain Eric. After all, that sort of thing really only matters to real victims, and Hollywood has a completely different way to showing rape and its affect. Everyone loves Eric anyway, so the fact that he doesn't make sense doesn't make much of a difference.

I too am turned off Godric created Eric - it's one thing that makes me think the fic is definitely going to be a silly no-brainer, and thus, not worth the time it takes to read it. I always give kudos to writers who use Appius - and this was born out of thinking about how much I appreciated RoseMac using Appius in Golden Gothic, and Thyra using Appius in Dead without a Work Permit.

I completely agree - although I did see little bits and pieces in Eric that made me think he had issues. That was the moment when Eric started to trust Sookie with more than just surface stuff - and why I think it was important for the DTTW stuff to be in a bubble for a while so he could get to know her on a shallower level so he'd be comfortable for DAG. When he told her, it was like the most perfect scene. I must admit that I got a little upset after that reading that Eric was "into men" and that it was out of character. That really upset me, because readers missed the entire point.

One of the things about Godric made Eric is that he chose to be Death's companion, which is a real issue. Book Eric, he wanted to go home and get a new mother for his children so he could go raiding. TB Eric wanted to get back at Russell - to the point that 1000 years later, Godric has to tell him to let it go. He should be vastly different - more like Appius than like Eric, merely because he sees vampirism as a step up in the killing stakes.

I have a hard time believing that Sookie still talks to either of them again in TB. I'd kick them summarily out of my life. I was thinking - how do you fix the clusterfuck without making Sookie stupid? Answer: Clean her of vampire blood, give her her brain back, and make all the vampires forget they knew her - with amnesia. That way you could get the romances out of the toilet sometime in the future.

:D *shuffles feet* Like Eric, I have more than one motive, and one is selfishly that I read stuff that makes more sense. :D
