So, I've been gone for a few days, and I'm usually not. Figured I better inform peeps.
For those of you who don't know, I live in Brisbane. Where flood waters are currently receded to the point that the gigantic clean up is going on. Mr. Minty is there right now with his shovel and surely sweating his little arse off. Mr. Minty sweats like a racehorse, so he'll look like a drowned rat when he gets home.
Both of our works were in flood areas - and this is one woman who's happy she's always worked from home on her thesis, rather than it being in an office that was in a building on the river front, and went under, because I had a warning at 9pm the night before the wave by SMS not to go on campus. :D
I was born in 1974, but in July, so I always heard about the '74 floods, celebrated the building of the Wivenhoe Dam when I was at school and everything. My parents always talked about how wet everything was, and how awful it was. Now I know that the most awful thing about floods is the sheer disruption that happens afterwards.
Let me tell you, everyone panicked like crazy beforehand. They bought out stocks and stocks of food. Rather stupidly like people in first world countries, they bought out all milk, bread and stone fruit. Not useful if the power goes off, as it has in some areas. There were walls of canned goods left wanting on the shelf, but the perishables, they went instantly.
We live near a tributary that feeds into the Brisbane River, which was scarily high coming up to the floods, and we were worried that as happened last January, we'd have heavy storms that took out our power for three days. Luckily, we were unscathed. So here I sit, slightly damp, not dead, finally with time to spare and thought I'd let you all know.
Now to read the 78890890890 fanfic updates in my inbox. :D
