HOW to BE NEW
wake up early. eat a light breakfast. wrap your mother's rocking chair songs in tissue and put them in a knapsack. fill a canteen with your sister's stories. build a portable radio out of old monochrome photographs and spin the dial until you hear your father whistling good morning through the static. walk into the forest. count your steps out loud. stop when the numbers sound tired. listen. when you begin to feel hungry, sit down under a tree. say grace. make a picnic of your history.

today i went to capitol hill and found confounded books - a tiny store filled with albums and a wall of diy books, a shrine to self-publishing - and purchased two handmade titles. growing up i was told you did not travel to capitol hill alone, in fact don't go to capitol hill at all they said. yes, there certainly are rainbow flags hanging along broadway and ragged street people too, dear parents. of course today they do not mind, in fact when i told my mom where i was headed this afternoon she said have fun getting coffee and indeed i did. when i arrived at bauhaus a woman had just pulled a chair into the middle of the sidewalk out front and told a man to sit down and proceeded to give him a haircut on the corner of that busy intersection, using a squirt bottle and comb to make sure each snip was just so. and we all looked on amused. inside one wall housed two stories of books; a ladder on wheels leaned against the shelves so customers could retrieve whatever called out. i sat upstairs and wrote a bit, the space needle behind me, visible through the giant windows.
