It must be the truth.

Today we found the end of the rainbow.

Tessa, Julia, Gary and I were driving down 9 towards Keene to see a play. The day had been sunny, but we're still in monsoon season, and half the sky had clouded over and endeavored to rain in that confused way it sometimes does during the summer: clear skies, then a sprinkle, then a downpour, then a full stop, then a patch of sun. We noticed a double rainbow away off to our right- closer than rainbows often seem to be, but not surprisingly so.

We drove along, watching the rainbow, watching the sky, until we rounded a bend, and suddenly there it was. The end of the rainbow, gingerly laid down right on Route 9.

It was very much like the effect one can acheive with a prism and a sunny window and a smooth floor, except much more dramatic, and stretching nearly across a full lane of traffic. Because it was still raining a little and the sun was at an angle, there was a fair piece of the rainbow itself attached, too, which is something one never sees on one's living room floor.

If it hadn't been Route 9, heavily trafficked Route 9, I am sure we would have stopped the car and gotten out and danced in the middle of the road. I rather think we should have. As it was we shrieked and gasped and cheered and stared ("I can see the pot of gold!" yelped Gary) and then were sensible and drove on.

It was a double rainbow, I mentioned this, yes? After finding one end of it, the thought of finding the end of the second rainbow didn't even cross our minds. But around another bend, and there it was, too. We drove right through it. I believe the end of the rainbow passed over our car.

I feel that this should have some sort of cosmic significance in my life. I have found the end of not one but two rainbows. I did not burst into song, nor did my life burst into Technicolor, and nothing supernatural occured that I noticed (although I'm not saying I'm an expert). Instead we drove on, proceeded to get lost, wandered into the play 20 minutes late, and had an excellent time rehashing our Catholic childhoods, with little further mention of the rainbow's end.

I'm sure that has some meaning, too, but I'm not entirely sure what.

huh, friends, random
