My Surreal New York Life

You never know what kind of adventure you'll have in this city. I had meant to get on the one uptown local at 42nd st. I just bought a few comics and I like the long local train ride up to 125th so i can read my new comics but as I got to the station the 2 express just arrived so I hopped on. The train is empty I sit down near a guy who looks really really familiar. Then it hits me - it's that SNL actor Sergio or something who played Obama during the campaign skits.

So I decide at my stop I'd tell him he was really funny and pay him a complement or whatever. I didn't want to say anything on the train cause I never really know what to say and didn't want to bother him to much. So the train is about to leave and an older black woman gets on. I don't think she was homeless or anything but her appearence was a bit unkempt - she sits between me and the SNL guy - no big deal.

She sees I have Midtown Comics bag but only sees the logo and mistakes it for an record shop logo that she says went out of buisness. I'm polite - chit chat a bit but keep in mind the train has about 10 people on it all dead silent except this woman talking unsettlingly loud. Like really really loud.

The conversation then swerves to how she walked out of a store and the little detector beeped and they grabbed her and took her in and demanded she open her coat etc. So here am on the uptown 2 next to a recognizeable tv and film actor while this woman talks to me at a volume one notch below yelling about prejudice.

See at this point I'm a bit taken aback and watching my words. I had said I only come to 42nd st once a week just to get comics. She then asked if I was prejudice. No idea the logic on that one. So I'm quietly agreeing while SNL guy is clearly trying to pretend that he can't hear the two of us talking / woman nearly yelling. So we get to 96th street and SNL guy gets off rather quickly and leaves the station. I get off shortly after him wave goodbye to my new subway friend and wait on the local 1....The train I meant to get on in the first place.
