Kitty Update
He slept through the night! Well, almost.
I did some research online and this problem seems all too common. One suggestion was to tire him out by playing with him before bed, and not letting him sleep through the day. So we had a good session of playing with hair ties, and think I will go get some more toys today.
We went downstairs and I locked them in with me so he could not run after "the big squirt" and bother someone else. So, about three am he goes for it, and I grab the bottle, aim and shoot. NOw, honestly, I was half asleep, not sure if I aimed it even right at him nor do I think any water came out. But he must have understood either the sound of the bottle or my intent, because he did run... and slept at the top of the stairs all night with no further incidents! Wow!
And this morning, much to my pleasant surprise, he is all cuddly and purring.
