Silvia and I pulled the motorcycle into the garage and headed into the house. I walked behind her, arms wrapped around her waist, and she laughed as I kissed her neck, stumbling over my own feet. We round the corner into the living room and Silvia stops, making me really trip this time and land flat on my ass. “Aye, pelliroja, thanks a lot,” I state as she grabs my hand and pulls me up, as I hear laughing coming from the living room in front of us. Don Lorenzo sits in the recliner, feeding a bottle to Mar and chuckling at us. Sara is sitting on the couch, wrapped in Lucas’ arms and both of them are also laughing at us. I look down, blushing, as most people don’t get to see this side of me, the clumsy side. Hell, it still surprises them to see my softer side with Silvia and the baby.
“So, how was your evening alone, titas?” Sara asks, winking. “It was good…great actually,” I say wrapping my arm around Silvia’s waist and pulling her into my lap as I sit on the empty seat on the couch. “What did you guys end up doing, anyway?” Don Lorenzo asks, as he shifts the baby in his arms. “Uhh…” I begin, as Lucas raises an eyebrow, Sara stifles a laugh, and Silvia turns to bury her face in neck. “We, uhh…we, just, uhh, ha-had a picnic and uhh, t-took a ride on the motorcycle…and then…uhh, watched the sunset,” I finish nervously. “Well that sounds nice, hijas,” Don Lorenzo replies as he stands with Mar. “I’m going to go now and leave you all to get some sleep. I’ll stop by again this week to see you and Mar, Silvia. Sarita, I will see you at work,” he says as he hands the baby to Silvia, who is also standing now. “Miranda! Fernández! I’ll see you first thing Monday morning at the precinct,” he says quite sternly, before giving a quick smile and kissing Mar, Silvia, and Sara on the foreheads and heading out the door. “Alright, well, we had fun with lovely little Mar, but we know you guys need some sleep, so Lucas and I are going to head out too,” Sara says. “Thanks for letting us come hang out with this little punk over here,” Lucas says, smiling. “G’night, titas. We’ll see you soon,” Sara says, dragging Lucas out the door.
“Well, then, pelliroja, let’s get this little one to bed,” I whisper as Mar’s eyes begin to droop. “Si, Pepa. We all should probably get some sleep. I know you’re exhausted after working and all, and so am I from our little date tonight,” she says, winking as she heads up the stairs with our daughter. I follow obediently as she heads to the nursery and puts Mar in the crib while I turn on the baby monitor. She stands over the crib and looks lovingly at our daughter, before grabbing my hand and walking slowly to our bedroom. “I’m going to take a shower, princesa. Care to join me?” I question, slyly. “No, Pepa, as much as I would love to, I’m going to wait until you’re done to take one, that way if Mar wakes up, I can go put her back to sleep.” “Vale. I’ll be done in a few minutes,” I reply, as I head to the bathroom. I know I’m exhausted when my eyes begin to droop while I’m standing under the spray of the shower. And when I get out of the shower and head back into the bedroom, I know Silvia is exhausted too, because she is passed out on the bed. So, I climb into bed and cover us both up as I wrap my arms around her, hoping that we get lots of sleep tonight and that Mar decides to sleep through a whole night again.
I wake up early in the morning and I’m not sure why considering I’m so exhausted. Silvia is still asleep and I brush my fingers through her hair softly. I can hear Mar starting to whine on the baby monitor so I head to the nursery to tend to her before Silvia wakes up. When I lean over the crib and pick my beautiful baby girl up, she stares at me in wonder. I run my fingers over her head, noting how much her flaming red hair has grown. She looks more and more like Silvia every day, but I think she may be getting my personality. We’ll have a wonderful time with her when she’s a teenager, if she ends up like me, won’t we, I think to myself sarcastically. But then I remember that I am with Silvia and we are nothing like my parents were, so even if she ends up with my personality and attitude, she’ll still turn out a better teenager than I did…I hope. Mar has fallen back asleep and I realize that once again all she wanted was to be held for a few minutes. I kiss her forehead and place her back into the crib. Before I leave the room, I glance around at the various pictures we’ve hung up in the nursery. Pictures of Mar from when she was first born, with Silvia and I, with Don Lorenzo, with Paco, with Sara and Lucas, and even one with everyone at the precinct. It makes me smile at what a family we have formed. I see a small amount of sunlight peeking in the curtains, so I head back down the hallway.
I stop in my tracks upon walking into the bedroom and I am breathless. The sunlight that is barely streaking through the curtains has cast a soft glow on Silvia who is lying on her stomach, red hair cascading across her back, sheets pooled at her waist. I once again decide that this is a perfect opportunity for me to utilize my photography skills, so I grab the camera and snap a few pictures from the doorway and then move to slowly and carefully climb on to the bed, taking pictures of Silvia’s beautiful sleeping form from different angles. ”Pepa, what are you doing?” mumbles Silvia, startling me as I almost fall out of the bed. “Uhh, I didn’t know you were awake, princesa.” “Were you taking pictures of me while I slept?” she questions, still muffled, because her face is still buried in the pillow. “Eh, si. I was. I’m sorry. Couldn’t help myself,” I say quietly, hoping she’s not mad. “S’okay. Come back to bed.” So I climb back into bed letting Silvia positions her head on my chest and I know she is listening to my heart beat. It’s something that she’s always loved doing and her breathing quickly falls in rhythm with mine.
“Aye, pelliroja. It’s Sunday. We can spend the entire day lounging around. Just me and you and the baby,” I whisper as I stroke her hair. “That sounds wonderful. No interruptions. Just the three of us.” “What do you think we should do today?” I ask. “Mmm. Let’s take Mar out for a walk. And then we can lay out in the yard and play in the grass. She loves to do that, and you’ve missed her having fun out there while you’ve been at work,” Silvia whispers back and I can tell she is falling back asleep. “Alright, princesa. We’ll do that. Just sleep for now.” And as she falls back into her slumber, I keep stroking her hair and watching her sleep, while listening to make sure Mar does not start crying. I am definitely looking forward to my first full day with my beautiful family since I started back at the precinct.
