In defense of Marian Aguilera.

While I haven't seen MA's video interview and thus don't want to touch its content, I REALLY don't think it's fair to make comments like "MA didn't want to be a lesbian icon" or "she doesn't care about/understand the GLBT situation." That is an outrageously large speculation that we really have no basis for thinking, and one that could be INCREDIBLY hurtful if it ever got back to MA herself. (Not to mention that it makes the GLBT community as a whole look like a pack of ungrateful bitches. TBH, if I were MA, reading these anti-MA posts and the way she's being treated in them, I probably wouldn't want to be a gay icon either.)

We have no idea what's going on in MA's personal life. For all we know, she has a sick parent she needs to take care of, and simply doesn't feel like trumpeting that fact to the world. For all we know, she's super stressed and was told by doctors that she needs to take a break, and doesn't feel like trumpeting that fact to the world. For all we know, she was shoved off the show by the producers, and is trying to handle it with grace and class, and doesn't feel like trumpeting this fact to the world. Etc etc etc. There are a thousand explanations for why she left that don't come CLOSE to the almost-accusations that have been flying around here and other places. And quite frankly, none of those explanations are any business of ours, anyway. It's MA's life; she doesn't owe us anything. We should be grateful for MA and the work she did as Silvia, and how gracious she was to the fans, not pointing fingers and accusing her of being somehow latently homophobic or not socially conscious or whatever because the WRITERS didn't script the last episode the way we would have liked.

So please, guys, I'm going to ask that we all calm down a little bit and stop ragging on MA. Stop speculating on why she left, because again, fundamentally it's NOT our business. If you want to take shots at the WRITERS for the manner in which they wrote Silvia off, be my guest, because as far as I'm concerned, good writing is what they're paid to do and it's debatable whether the wedding qualifies as good writing. (I actually think the crappy writing started several seasons ago, but maybe that's just me.) But the comments flying around re: MA are starting to make me very uncomfortable, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

So please, please, let's stop giving MA a hard time, and instead let's just be grateful for the time we had with Silvia.

(Mods, feel free to delete if I'm out of line or if this post is going to be more trouble than it's worth.)

[ETA: Just want to make clear that this post isn't directed at any one poster. The MA negativity is all over.]
