I don't always talk about politics. I was reminded recently about what a lost opportunity Evanescence had way back at the beginning of the century. Before they got lost in the gooey world of radio pop, Evanescence actually showed the potential to become an excellent progressive/power metal band. I remember hearing the song from the Daredevil movie on the radio the first time and being taken by surprise at the change of pace from the rest of the junk on the air. I later found that wasn't even close to the best of their work.

Their early demos included some musically creative, if not fully matured, hooks and bags of tricks. That combined with the face-pummeling production of their big label debut, Fallen made them a really inspired gothic metal act with the integrity to be included with the likes of such bands as Nightwish and After Forever. Unfortunately, the magic didn't last past that first album. The primary writing team was Guitarist Ben Moody, Keyboardist David Hodges and Singer Amy Lee. Shortly after the album's release & subsequent debut on MTV and nation wide radio, the band denied their inclusion in the alternative Christian music scene in controversial fashion which caused Hodges, the most talented of the three in songwriting ability, to leave the band. During that album's tour, Moody got addicted to drugs and left for rehab, never to return to the band which left Amy Lee's over inflated ego in charge.

Since then, Evanescence has turned into the generic pop factory doing songs that sound like Christina Aguillera rejects, putting Amy Lee's head so far up in the clouds she can't figure out where she's going. Moody has done a substandard acoustic emo solo project & writes songs for Avril Levign, Lindsay Lohan & Kelly Clarkson. Hodges has started an unremarkable electronica group and also works with Celine Dion & The Backstreet Boys...so much could have been and so much ended up not being.

Gift ideas for these three kids:
David needs copies of his early work to remind him about the talent he's no longer utilizing.
Ben needs a gift certificate to the Betty Ford clinic because when he comes to realize how much he's been wasting the last few years of his life, he's going to pick up some bad habits again.
Amy needs a parachute so she can land safely when she finally falls out of the sky.
