I may not be a big city boy, but I am a city boy, born and raised. I also have an interest in urban development and the constant strife caused by the notion that 100 different cultures and races must live together peacefully in the inner city. Since I like city life, I also like movies about city life. So here's my 15 favorite inner city films.
15) Wild Style (NY) & Krush Groove (NY)
14) Crash (LA)
13) Suburbia (LA)
12) Boyz N the Hood (LA)
11) Juice (NY)
10) Colors (LA)
9.5) Shaft (1971) (NY)
9) Trespass (StL)
8) Assault on Precinct 13 (LA)
7) Barbershop (Chi)
6) Do The Right Thing (NY)
5) Clockers (NY)
4) Beat Street (NY)
3.5) French Connection (NY)
3) New Jack City (NY)
2) The Warriors (NY)
1) Last Dragon (NY) & The Blues Brothers (Chi)
I realize there's diversity in this list and there's more than 15 movies. They range from gritty ghetto gang dramas to cheezy feel good kung fu comedys that can barely be taken seriously. But I like what I like.
What are your favorite films about the city?
