Wow. This is an especially lovely one from you.

there is the tug of gravity and Will standing abaft of the mast

I like how Will and gravity are conflated here. Very skillful.

She is lying entwined in sheets and her husband's arms in the warm cicada night, and the sea only whispers along the shoreline, its secrets held at arm's length.

I adore this sentence--"warm cicada nights"--I know those nights...and then the whisper of sadness in the secrets held at arm's length...such a complex emotion there. Comfort, regret, longing. All those possibilities that she can see from her high vantage point.

This is just beautiful through and through. I think it was the fic I wanted to read just now, and didn't know it. :-)

Simply beautiful.

You never fail to amaze me with the beauty of your mastery of language. Everything is exquisitely specific and perfectly described. You have the grace passages perfect.

I love it, as always!

I read this "The wind is high, singing through the rigging and swelling the sails, and the night is perfectly clear. The rolling swells are limned in moonlight, the dark shadow of some distant island just visible below the strange southern stars" and could almost feel the wind and see the stars. Lovely!

Thank you! I had a very clear picture of that in my head when I started to write, and I'm glad it came through!

Possibility splinters out like the lines running to the deck.

That's what is so lovely about this, and them. Beautiful work, bravo!

She's in her own little world up there on the mast and yet even there she can't escape from the lives she might have lived. You've painted her little-seen vulnerable side very well.

Thank you! It is nice to sometimes get through the tough exterior (much as I love that) to the Elizabeth beneath.
