Haha. Trust me, I know that the Democrats are plenty sullied already... I'm just trying to keep it from getting even moreso - much like the environmental movement.
I am also amused that the "right to choose" argument has been pretty constant while other issues have evolved. And I guess my point was not entirely clear: I was not implying that ALL liberal issues are going to be come obvious tenets. I was implying that some of the things we argue about now will be, to some extent, "decided," except by a small minority. I agree that the "unquestioning support' for unions, teachers unions in particular, is not about to become a shared principle, nor will the perpetuation of the current welfare system - but I would argue that even within the Democratic party now, these things are contested. That's where I was getting the idea that the kinds of things that divide the democrats will, at some point, be the things that will divide the country.
My post was, I admit, really, really, flagrantly biased and a little bit tongue in cheek. I do, however, think Specter would have been better off as an independent.

Specter may be temperamentally more suited, BUT.... he wouldn't get reelected. And I think he's pretty worthwhile. So I'm still excited.
