I don't know about the rest of you, but I was raised on a healthy diet of Mr. Rogers, Sesame Street, and Reading Rainbow.
Today was the last episode ever of Reading Rainbow. "The change started with the Department of Education under the Bush administration, he explains, which wanted to see a much heavier focus on the basic tools of reading - like phonics and spelling.
Grant says that PBS, CPB and the Department of Education put significant funding toward programming that would teach kids how to read - but that's not what Reading Rainbow was trying to do."
Um, excuse me, but all the phonics and spelling in the world isn't going to get a kid to love reading. There aren't many kids who love to read anymore. My brother doesn't love to read like I do. He didn't watch reading rainbow.
