Dr. Swerdlow told me once that he hated exclamation points because you should be able to convey the emotion in the sentence without having to use an exclamation point.
I feel fake when I start out (or end) an email with an exclamation mark.

Hello! (that makes me want to say hello like Mrs. Doubtfire).
I think about his comment everytime I send an email to someone that begins "Hi!" I suppose I'd rather use "Hi!" than "Dear so-and-so" every time because I don't feel the need to say Dear so-and-so when I email the person all the time.
I thought about this today while going through old emails. The designer for the last appeal used exclamation pontss like they were going out of style. HI!!! So glad you like the proof!!! I love it!!! I picture her as a middle aged woman who still wears pigtails. She was perky.
