Cute, Tiny Animal T-shirts

I still have one more shirt to go, which will deserve it's own entry, so here are the photos of the finished shirts.

I just realized that not everyone on my flist will know what's going on here. Whoops! If anyone's wondering why a bunch of pictures of handpainted shirts showed up in my journal... last year, I started taking a small number of commissions for cute, tiny animal t-shirts. I had to delay the second order to finish graduating, which I am finally finishing up now. I'm not sure when/if/in what altered form I'll be doing t-shirt commissions again, but if you have any interest in a shirt for yourself, that will probably effect which way I decide.

Anyway. Enjoy the photos. :)

The animals this time included: bearded dragon, black cat, Chinese dragon, European dragon, phoenix, moose, rhino, fatty tuna (toro), tiger, yeti, owl, griffin, and a coral snake. Also a dragonfly and a goat, but I don't have photos of either at the moment.

1. Bearded Dragon.
The likeness here looks lovely in person. It stood out well against the dark shirt, and I love the perspective combined with his little musical note.

(a few of his toes had not been outlined when I took the picture, but I finished that before mailing it off.)

2. Black Cat.
Cute and well placed. I like the radioactively colored mice. However, I wish I'd tried for a more realistic cat. I though a simplified cartoony cat would be cuter, but since my kitten subject is black it left him a little flat and featureless.

3. Chinese Dragon
This shirt looks brilliant in person. I had real trouble giving it away. Probably my favorite, though the coral snake is a close runner up.

4. Western Dragon
This one also came out quite well, with the blue highlighting on the wings. A bit bigger than I'd intended to make it too!

5. Dragon + Phoenix
I got a lot of dragon and phoenix requests this time, so you'll see that this is a smaller version of the larger phoenix a few shirts down and the larger Chinese dragon above. The yin yang should also be flipped if I'm really trying to associate the animals with a specific side. *wince*

6. Hiro Nakamura from Heroes.
Painting tiny chibis onto t-shirt fabric was a lot weirder than I'd thought it would be. His glasses were nearly too fine to be within the ability of my brushes. Still, cuteness a success and looks good on the black.

7. Moose
The colors look good together and the antlers are quite nice in person. His rump is a bit troublesome because I painted him off center on the first try. D:

8. Phoenix
This one came out pretty neat. After the Chinese dragon, I kept wanting to find ways to add more color to it, but luckily, I knew that trying to experiment with blue or white flames could not turn out well on a first attempt.

9. Rhino
A stencil. I really like the color the scheme and the placement, though the wings can be a bit hard to see. I feel like there's something I could have done to make them more visible short of outlining them in black, but I still can't figure out what it would have been.

10. Sushi
Fatty Tuna, aka Toro, aka yummy. Painted at lightning speed so my brother could bring it to a friend before she flew back to school. Turned out quite well and I like the text.

11. Tiger
I like this one. It needed another layer of white paint before I added the stripes. I was so happy with the sketch that I rushed a bit. It was also one of my first tries at painting something light onto such a dark color.

12. Yeti
Everytime I mentioned this shirt my mother asked me what a yeti was. She'd never seen that clay-mation Christmas special.

13. Owls
Every time I try to painted feathered wings, I have to paint over it and start all over again at least once. Luckily they always come out well on the other side! I really like the speech bubbles here.

14. Griffin
I like the griffin, and that you can really see the paint strokes on the highlights. That said, I honestly have no idea how it will look as a t-shirt, worn. The colors didn't complement each other as well as some of the other shirts (like the bearded dragon--I think a dark background color would have helped the griffin pop a bit more), and he looks a bit lost and lonely in the middle there. I wish I'd used my cute speech bubble trick to liven him up, make him look like he had a reason to be there sitting on your chest.

15. Coral snake
The last to be completed and totally worth it. Even more baller in person. Took half of forever to paint because I had to apply several layers before it started showing up vibrantly against the asphalt and the whole 'going around the whole sleeve' thing.

I'm glad it's not in my size or I'd have trouble putting it in the mail.
