A new boy arrived at the orphanage today. He was a frail-looking creature, with wavy grey hair that sometimes passed off as white, clothes that engulfed him in their size, and no shoes. When Roger introduced him, he was standing, but slouching, so much that one could tell he wanted to sit.
“L, Mello, this is Near,” said Roger. Near ducked his head. Mello smiled, warming up to the shy boy, and was about to shake the boy’s hand when he was interrupted. “He’s only eight, but is quite the smart child.” Roger rubbed Near’s hair affectionately.
And when L’s face piqued with interest and he said, “Yoroshiku onegai shimasu,” Mello felt as if something very heavy had just slammed into his stomach. L only casually spoke Japanese with one person - Mello.
L, for all his skills as a detective, never noticed when Mello locked himself in his room and cried.
