let's just say someone is on trial. and in his/her defense testimony, s/he says that such and such did not happen and so and so is a liar and that s/he has no idea how such and such happened. And just say that it turns out that his/her statements are not true and that he was involved and was lying on the stand, other than a guilty verdict that would result in penalties, can s/he also be charged with perjury for knowingly lying while being examined in court?

i've often wondered this.

if i say i'm innocent, and i'm not, and i'm found guilty, i must have been lying in my own defense, right? and is it not a crime of some sort to knowingly deceive while testifying in court? or does perjury only apply to witnesses?
