I just got an email from the creator of My Name is Earl!
In last night's episode, a character dies whose only friends were online. In a flashback to when he was alive, they showed him posting on televisionwithoutpity.com. I hate TWoP, the posters are nasty and elitist and I just don't like going there, it makes me feel bad. Fandom Talk is way better. They're nice and my friend, Caroline, is a recapper (you should totally read her Heroes recaps, she's awesome). Anyway, I visited the My Name is Earl forum after the shoutout and sure enough, the post he was writing in the flashback was there.
Well, this morning, another character on the show posted a message under his name announcing that he was dead and giving an email address to write to for information about his funeral. On a lark, I sent a note saying how much I admired the time it took to set up that joke and asking if Camden County was based any at all on Texas, because I swear to all that's holy that it's Belton immortalized on screen, and Greg Garcia wrote me back!!! This is what his reply said:
Camden isn't really based anywhere. It's purely fictional, but we do
have some writers from Texas. Thank you so much for watching.
Greg Garcia
Not a lot, I know, but still exciting. And I still maintain that Belton or another similar small Texas town was their template. It's just too spot on for it not to be. Although, I guess white trash is universal.
