BSG's Miniseries

Jun 03, 2010 20:15

Lots of people have been doing that tv meme recentlly. Silently, I found myself replying to a lot of those questions with "BSG miniseries". To this day and 4 seasons of BSG, I still consider its pilot movie one of the best things ever. One of the best BSG "episodes" ever and one of the best movies in general, ever. Considering the fact that I was ( Read more... )

"Wow, did you watch it before the 1st season had been filmed?"
I coughed it when the pilot was aired on sci-fi. My memory may not be reliable here but there didn't seem to be a year long gap till the first season? But I didn't get into fandom till much later.

"I'm so with you in sobbing over never seeing him again. Sometimes, when we saw shots of Colonial One showing its cockpit later in the series, I was so sure I could spot him."
I think I spotted him on NC near Laura's tent when C1 was grounded. :P I would have enjoying seeing Laura interact with a 'regular guy' character whose hand she'd held at the beginning, even absent any romance.

"I have to say the one young actor that left an impression on me at this point was Aaron Douglas. But he had some good scenes, too. I was fond of Apollo, but I think this pretty much came down to his interactions with Kara and especially Laura."
I thought AD was one of the most natural of the younger ones too. Apollo did well in his scenes with Laura/Kara, but he came over as a bit forced to me in his early scenes with Adama. Or maybe I was a bit tired of yet another son with father issues plot.

"If the writers had decided to risk going for a romantic/sexual relationship between those two I would have bought into it. It certainly would have been interesting and a bold move (older woman/young stud, ewww, right?) and I agree, I don't think it would have been a happy romantic thing."
I agree that it would have been a bold move, and that'd be part of the appeal, aside from their natural chemistry. There was certainly some mutual admiration in the beginning. Why was it so unbelievable to the writers that there'd be a touch of sexual/romantic interest, particularly from Lee? (because of the intended pairing with Kara? but both attractions could exist! I'm afraid maybe they thought this would put people off.) Their situation allowed for moments of unexpected intimacy. Interest from/in Lee would probably have been one of the last things Laura expected (on top of the apocalypse + presidency!), and it'd have been interesting to see how she would have dealt with it (WWLD?). Even if the attraction was never acted upon, it would have been an interesting note to play between them, especially with Adama coming into the dynamic (alas, i think they thought one Adama at a time was enough for Laura ;)). Like you, I liked their dynamic in other forms too- advisor/confidante etc.- and they had something to contribute to the other's perspective. Real pity they dropped the relationship at an interesting juncture of possible change and growth! Their S3 trial dynamic felt quite abrupt, though more than a season later. And oh boy, the whole S4 (should have continued from the start) political grooming thing could have been done so much better. The whole political angle in fact! But I won't go on about that again.

"Sorry to disappoint you, but I don't think they had time for any pillow talk in 4.5 :P"
Just when I get a teeny bit romantic, the CGB has to crush it! :P Tell me what they did in bed then, if not pillow talk? :P (heheh, did they ever auction off the pillow?)

"but you can just hear EJO say "More blood! More blood!". *ggg*"
And it could have been "more nudity! more nudity!". *g* But I guess EJO was intimidating enough as he was, heh.

"Which actor in particular are you refering to? Because I thought there were a couple of weird background actors in the mini. "
LOL. Does that mean you're less picky than me or more? :P 'cause there's only 1 standout that I can think of, and that's the annoying, distracting woman behind Laura with her weird smiley expression! Doral annoyed me too (but I guess that was intentional?) and I would have edited him out of A/R's 'love at first sight' scene. :P

I appreciated what Helo did in the mini, but he was never interesting enough for me to justify all that screen time on Caprica in S1! Couldn't he have just gifted his sperm to Cottle's freezer or something for humanity's future? :P

"But yeah, that chicken pie part could have been done better."
If only it'd been algae pie instead then we could have seen Laura's WTF face too. LOL. Oh that's a terrible joke from me. Sorry. :P

Were you surprised at the reveal of Sharon as a cylon model at the end? Hm.. would it have been even more interesting/shocking if it'd been another character...say Laura or Bill! Imagine the WTF! :P

I was surprised by Sharon, yes. Can't say I saw this coming. Well, I can't say I saw any of the human characters being revealed as a Cylon coming at this point.

Wow! ((((earlyhourfan)))) So there was no one year gap between the mini and season 1? I always thought they tested the waters with the mini first before they got the okay for the series. Maybe a couple of months in between then?

I think I spotted him on NC near Laura's tent when C1 was grounded. :P I would have enjoying seeing Laura interact with a 'regular guy' character whose hand she'd held at the beginning, even absent any romance.

She was totally rooming tenting with him on NC. *ggg* And yes, I'm with you re: interactions with a regular character, but you already knew that. ;)

Apollo did well in his scenes with Laura/Kara, but he came over as a bit forced to me in his early scenes with Adama.

Dito. Actually, he came across a bit forced in most father/son conflict scenes with Adama, even later on. Or maybe that awkwardness was part of Apollo's character when it came to his old man.

Why was it so unbelievable to the writers that there'd be a touch of sexual/romantic interest, particularly from Lee? (because of the intended pairing with Kara? but both attractions could exist! I'm afraid maybe they thought this would put people off.)

I guess you just answered your own question. Even among a lot of BSG fans, the Lee/Laura pairing seems abnormal or kinky or whatever you may want to call it. They probably thought the broader audience wouldn't react well to it.

From the series bible regarding Lee & Laura: "His position as Laura's trusted advisor wfll brmghim closer to her emotionally than he is to his own father. She wfll let him in on her secret and he wfll make it his personal mission to find a way to treat her illness without anyone - even his father - - finding out the truth. Perhaps most unexpected of all, Lee will develop a budding attraction for Laura on a personal level - an unexpected quality of their close interaction and one that actually makes him a quasi-rival to bis father, increasing rather than decreasing their conflicted relationship."

Interest from/in Lee would probably have been one of the last things Laura expected (on top of the apocalypse + presidency!), and it'd have been interesting to see how she would have dealt with it (WWLD?)

Interesting train of thoughts. It really could have shifted the ground beneath her further than the apocalypse and the cancer already did. *mourns the missed potential*

The whole political angle in fact! But I won't go on about that again.

*chuckle* Okay then, we'll leave it at that. I'm probably with you anyway. *lol*

Just when I get a teeny bit romantic, the CGB has to crush it! :P Tell me what they did in bed then, if not pillow talk? :P (heheh, did they ever auction off the pillow?)

Well, between dying, mutinies, cylon reveals and goo in a time period of 3 or 4 weeks, they were probably lucky if they got to have a quickie in between. Oh yeah, and then there's that utterly cramped rack of his, which is the annihilator of any relaxed, playful pillow talk. I guess she may have started, but was interrupted by him dropping out of bed, hitting his head hard.

there's only 1 standout that I can think of, and that's the annoying, distracting woman behind Laura with her weird smiley expression!

Ah okay, that was probably the most annoying one, I agree. But hey, maybe she just wanted to put a bit more life into her background role (We could have needed her as a quorum member!) or maybe she was just so happy about standing next to Mary frakking McDonnell. :P

Couldn't he have just gifted his sperm to Cottle's freezer or something for humanity's future? :P

Uuuuuhm, no. :P

Algae pie...now that was a terrible joke from you.
