Penny still hasn't passed the stone. i just got off the phone with our new urologist, and he said that he's hoping she can pass it over night, but he's going to schedule her for a procedure to remove the stone in the afternoon, just in case she doesn't. that way we have the OR reserved and everything. if it goes well, it should only take 20-30 minutes, and she can be discharged afterwards (after checking on the baby and making sure she's doing ok after being sedated).
he really wants the stone out of her for a couple reasons, mostly because of the baby. the pain on Penny is obviously going to affect the baby, and the narcotics, while not really harmful, aren't ideal for him either.
the procedure itsself
it isn't like a traditional surgery, where they'd cut her open and hack away at her innards. he said they would insert a small catheter (tube) inter her bladder and go up through the ureter and into her kidney until they found the stone (which we found out from a CT Scan is 4mm in diameter). depending on how the stone is positioned, he could either scoop it out with a kind of basket, and then remove the catheter and stone together, or he could use a laser to break it up and let it pass that way. either way he's going to place a stent in her ureter to help keep it open and let everything pass and settle down after all this. then he'll remove the stent in a few days. that's something he can do just at his office, so no more hospital for us.
