Your character is a teenager. They're wandering around, doing whatever, and -- shock! They spot a bloody mess of pre-teen nearby.
Your guy probably isn't going to gasp out, "A child!"
Really.
I mean, yeah, it might fit for your character. But for the average teen?
"A kid!" works.
Or maybe just, "Shit!", or, "Jesus!" -- or not saying anything at all.
