landing in san diego was a different experience than landing anywhere i've ever flown. and i've flown a few places. looking out the window i could see neighborhoods upon neighborhoods. in lima this spectacle looked like mountains literally made out of houses made out of  of tin and mud and plastic. but here it looked like something you might see on the inside of a computer chip. shiny lights and straight lines and grids. it was dark , and i could hardly distinguish clouds from harbor. it was like a dream. but under me was this great expanse of perfectly organized neighborhoods. dimly lit, neon-blue pools glowed up around the big houses. the streets were clean and the cars filed about neatly, their headlights glowing two-by-two through the mist. and i couldn't help but compare the scene to other cities i've dropped in on in the night...lima, madras, guatemala city, philadelphia...i craned my neck and imagined the people of san diego, going about their lives, totally unaware of how different their city looks from the sky than the rest of the world. unaware of how rich they are... and who am i? flying above it all like i know. i dont have a clue.

these were my thoughts upon landing in san diego.
