She smoothed down her dress and checked her hair in the mirror one last time. She had spent the whole day getting ready for her dinner with Paul and wanted to make sure she looked her best.
She’d gently curled her hair so it bounced softly on her shoulders and had applied her makeup carefully in order to accentuate her eyes. The dress was dark blue with a simple floral pattern and a low cut neck, which showed off her curves to perfection.
She knew she looked good and smiled at her reflection before making her way into her compact kitchen to finish plating up the food. He would be here any minute. He’d promised her he would finish work on time.
She had cooked lasagne. She knew it was a simple dish but he had always said her lasagne was the best he had ever tasted, so why change a winning formula?
She collected wine glasses, cutlery and candles, and set them out carefully on the table, making sure everything was in the right place. With one last look around her small flat she was finally satisfied that everything was perfect.
It was then she heard a gentle knock at her door. She felt her heart beat faster as she rushed over to let him in. As she opened her door she couldn’t stop the smile that plastered itself across her face when she saw him standing there. He had changed from his work suit into a pair of well fitting jeans and a casual t-shirt, which showed off his arms. He held a bunch of flowers out to her and smiled sweetly as she took them before standing back to let him in.
“Smells great,” he said. “I’ve been looking forward to this all day.”
“Me too,” she said, stumbling over the simple words.
He gently placed his hands on her shoulders. “Why so nervous, it’s not like we haven’t done this before?”
“I know it’s just, you make me nervous. Not in a bad way but still, it’s like there are giant moths in my stomach, not just butterflies.”
He ran his hands down her arms, causing goosebumps to appear. “You don’t need to feel like that with me Mellie. You don’t have to prove anything to me, I know how amazing you are.”
She felt the blush staining her chest and rising up her neck at his words.
“We…we should eat before it gets cold, and I need to put these in some water.”
They sat down at her small table and he poured some wine into her glass as she arranged the vase, now full of the beautiful flowers.
“So, how has your day been?” he asked.
As they ate their food and the candles on the table slowly burned down, she realised she had never felt happier. It was a simple evening, just food and drink and good conversation, but it was something she had never experienced before.
With him she felt safe.
With him she felt loved.
With him, she was home.
