The moon was full and bright in the clear sky above her, the stars standing out starkly against the dark blue backdrop. A gentle wind moved the leaves above them, causing strange shadows to dance across the floor.
All was quiet in the forest, all that is, apart from Zedd.
She had no idea how Richard could sleep through such a noise, but he seemed to be able to sleep through mostly anything. Kahlan didn’t have the same luck and once Zedd was asleep he was impossible to wake or move so she had woken early for her watch.
Richard had tried to persuade her to sleep again but she could see the exhaustion in his eyes and the fatigue that ran through his whole body. He could barely lift his feet from the floor as he walked towards her. It hadn’t taken much to convince him to lie down and close his eyes, and within minutes he was breathing slowly and deeply.
She sat herself on the grass near the warm crackling fire, pulling a blanket around her shoulders and leant back against a tree, watching him. Her eyes moved over his soft hair, the line of his jaw, the slope of his lips, the curve of his broad shoulders and down to his narrow waist.
He looked so peaceful, asleep in the moonlight, all the worries and responsibilities he carried so quietly, gone for a moment. If possible she would let him sleep always, to never have to face the fights and horrors that lay ahead. If she could she would take him away from here, to some secret place where they could be together always.
A small smile touched her face. It still amazed her that he loved her. Richard was the first man who hadn’t been afraid to touch her, hadn’t been afraid that she would use her Confessor powers on him. He trusted her completely. When she had realised the depth of his feelings she had wanted to cry tears of joy. It was rare for a Confessor to know such true emotion from another.
“Not a chance.” Those were the words he’d spoken, with a smile on his face, when Zedd had said he could leave if he wanted. Even though they could never truly be together she was happier than she had ever thought possible. Being here in this place, with him and Zedd, was the greatest thing she had ever done with her life. Protecting the Seeker was her reason for being. She had always been warned not to let her feelings get the better of her, but rather than hindering her, she was sure her feelings made her stronger and better able to defend him.
Not only was she fighting for all the peoples of the Midlands, she was fighting for her heart and as she watched the shadows from the fire dance across his features, she knew it was a worthy battle.
