things are linking up

In the spirit of the new year (a very wonderfully round 2008), I thought I'd recap a few of my favorite link discoveries from the past year, complete with nifty icons that have really nothing to do with the particular site:

www.passiveaggressivenotes.com : As we move from dormmates to roommates to officemates, one the thing that may remain the same are the pet peeves that we observe and keep bottle up inside until our rage comes out in the form of a polite, passive aggressive note. This site posts enjoyable, usually anonymous postings regarding loud dogs, messy sinks and general seething. If you would like to be entertained by something more creative than "your mother doesn't work here," this is the place for you.

http://jezebel.com : In the words of the White Stripes "I've said it once before but it bears repeating now," this is one of my absolute favorite sites - "jezebel: celebrity, sex, fashion for women. without airbrushing." It's not for the timid or the easily offended, but if you enjoy your pop culture commentary mixed with some politics and have a liberal streak, stop by. A couple of female bloggers keep me up with the indignities, the injustices and the inescapable celebs. As one contributor put it, "I get to comment on Jamie-Lynn Spears while making fun of Mike Huckabee commenting on Jamie Lynn Spears while making fun of Mike Huckabee not being briefed on Iranian nuclear proliferation ALL ON THE SAME BLOG."

www.snopes.com : Do we all remember when we first got to use the internet and had our first e-mail? And one of the first things you did was pass along one of those e-mails about Bill Gates giving away free money to everyone who forwards this badly worded note? (Or in my case, one regarding a year's supply of M&Ms... you can see where my priorities lie). Well, if I had access to snopes.com at the time, I would have been wiser and less annoying. (On a side note, do you guys ever get those handwritten notes in elementary school where you were supposed to copy the note five-gazillion times by hand and then pass them on to all your friends in order to get your crush to "ask you out"?) They offer a decently researched look at the rumors, urban legends and supposed-truths floating around. For example, it's false that colleges have written rules on how long students should wait for a late professor (http://www.snopes.com/college/admin/wait.asp), but a picture of Ronald McDonald being hauled away by the police are real (http://www.snopes.com/photos/odd/ronald.asp).

http://www.worth1000.com/ : Ever wonder what happens when good clothes go mad? If Flintstones-style tools were used today? The photo galleries on this site give you a very visual answer to all this and more. This site runs contests for photo manipulation and you can vote for the best in beginner and advanced categories. Plus there's just some amazing creativity/messed up minds out there. What would Those of you who have wrestled with Photoshop will have a new awe for these people.

http://www.mcphee.com/ : I know you always wanted bacon-shaped band-aids but never knew quite where to get them, so I am sharing this wonderful link with you. If you like all the kookie stuff that Urban Outfitters sells near the register but don't like their ridiculous prices, this gives you a direct option. I'll take the Unicorn vs. Narwhal play set.
