This is going to sound a bit strange, but sometimes when I'm surfing the internet (do we say "surfing the net" anymore? Is that a completely archaic phrase now? Am I uncool at age 22?) I feel like I'm looking through a little window at the rest of the world. I know that's not the best way to explain it, and now I sound like I'm writing a press release, but it's true. It's where I read the news, catch up on pop culture, read about the lives of friends and acquaintances, scroll through blogs and generally get a sense of what's going on in our (American) society more so than anywhere else. It's a like google earth, where I can have an overview of this society I'm living in and then zoom down on a section of it. It's fascinating that we can be more connected with each other through a complex set of codes and electricity than ever before through more "human" means. Do you think we'll get to the point where the majority of our interaction takes place in the cybersphere than in our own physical communities?
Speaking of google earth, have you tried the street level searching? For some parts of Tucson (and the rest of the country) you can actually "walk" around and see actual images of the buildings on a certain street. Also, I've noticed they've improved the quality of their regular zooming. I could tell at the time the satellite image was taken of my parent's house, my brother and mom were home, because I could clearly see their cars parked in the driveway. I also noticed that some people in our neighborhood had really bad backyards. And a lot of pools.
Please don't stalk my parents
Thought I'd share a few of my favorite blogs:
-hands down, www.jezebel.com is awesome. If you're offended by left-y, feminist-y, sex-y posts, I'd stay away.
-You can not resist the commentary of www.gofugyourself.com . You will find yourself integrating the phrase "well played" into your everyday speech before you know it
-dig into Michelle Collins' "favorite posts" on the right-hand side of her blog:
http://youcantmakeitup.blogspot.com/ I will not use the phrase "LOL" but I did chuckle audibly
I must admit, I have a specific folder named "procrastination" for all my blogs and random sites. At least I'm honest!
There's a cactus wren on my window sill. I love it.
PS: I'm trying to integrate more photos and graphics into my entries, because I think pictures make everything a little more enjoyable/readable.
PPS: I'm so happy that Firefox and Semagic now spell check when you're entering text into a box or field. I need it!
