My Card

Prompt #17: Krill
From: nialyind
Rating: Everyone
Characters: Krill the cat, some of Krill’s descendents, and Jeanie Penguino
Summary: Krill meets her great-grandkittens.
Words: 376

Note: No spoilers here, unless you consider learning the names of the next generation of the petacy to be a spoiler. :-)  Non-canon.

Every once in awhile, when Greta checked in on the main house, Krill would accompany her.  Like most cats, Krill didn’t particularly enjoy walking through the snow-wet feet were never fun-so it really was a rare occasion.  Today, however, Krill was looking forward to the visit because Pen had told her that her great-grandkittens had arrived.

“About time too,” Krill muttered to herself.  “She promised me grand-kittens when I helped with the recap and that was more than a year ago!”

Captain greeted his sister and Krill at the door and while he and Greta were chatting Krill snuck through the door on the right.  With Gloria finally big enough to have her own room no one was using the nursery, making it the ideal space to keep Tilapia and her three kittens.  The kittens were tumbling around the room playing with a toy mouse when Krill entered.

“Hi Grandma!” Tilapia purred as she got up from the pet bed where she had been resting.  “It’s good to see you!”

“Good to see you as well,” Krill replied, giving her granddaughter a friendly grooming.

Just then Jeanie entered the room.  “There you are, Krill!  Aunt Greta wasn’t sure where you had gotten off to.  Did you want to meet the kittens then?”

“Of course, human!” Krill replied, but to Jeanie it just sounded like a loud yowl.  Fortunately she interpreted it correctly and went and scooped up all three kittens.

Jeanie set them all down in the pet bed closest to Krill and all three of them hurried to the edge to see the visitor.

“Kids this is your great-grandmother,” Tilapia meowed.

“What do you think Krill?” Jeanie asked.  “This one is Halibut, this one is Tuna, and this one is Mackerel but we call him Mac for short.”

Krill sniffed each of the kittens’ noses while she purred.

“Want to play?” Tuna asked.

“Sure,” Krill replied.

“Get her!” Mac cried and all three kittens went into rough and tumble mode.  Krill played along good naturedly, being careful not to extend her claws when she batted back at the kittens.

“Yes,” she thought to herself as she showed the kittens how to best stalk the toy mouse.  “These three will surely make me proud.”

Prompt #18: Peace-Maker
From: mzyra
Rating: Everyone
Characters: Memphia and Gloria Penguino
Summary: Memphis and Gloria prepare to talk to their mother.
Words: 119

Note: 5/5 spoiler rating, although it is a very truncated scene in an attempt to not give away too much of what is going on.

“Are you absolutely sure about this?” Memphis asked as he and Gloria got out of the taxi in front of their parents’ house.

“Yes,” Gloria replied.

“One-hundred percent?”

“One-hundred-and-ten percent,” she smiled at her older brother.  “I really don’t mind doing it, especially since you and Jeanie don’t want to.”

“Mom’s going to be upset you know.  It’s not what she was planning.”

“No it’s not.  But I think it will be best for everyone in the long run.  It’s our lives after all.  We should get to make the decision.”

Memphis nodded as they reached the front door.  “Ready?”

“Yep!” Gloria gave him a reassuring grin.

“Well then, here goes nothing,” Memphis said as he rang the doorbell.

Prompt #19: Being Upstaged
From: widget_sims
Rating: Everyone
Characters: Ori, Phillip, Tegenaria, Pixie, Palmer, Polly, and Ruby Boolpropia
Summary: Living with a Golden Trio can be hard.
Words: 483

Note: No spoilers here.  Probably non-canon but I don’t have a feel for writing the youngest Boolpropia in my OWBC yet so that might change.

Ruby Boolpropia got off the bus and examined her report card.  “Yes!  Finally!  An A+!” she cried.  She ran into the house waiving the card above her head.  “Mom!  Dad!  Look!  I got an A+!”

Unfortunately when she finally found her parents in the kitchen they were already talking to the triplets, or the “Golden Trio,” as Ruby called them when no one could hear.

“Mom!  Dad!” Ruby said as she burst through the door.

“Hang on a second, honey,” Phillip said.  “Your siblings were just telling us about their day.”

“So today I topped my job and with the bonus I now have $3,000 in my bank account!” Pixie was saying.

“And I made captain of the football team,” Palmer added.

“And I found out that I earned three more scholarships,” Polly said.

Ruby’s shoulders drooped.  There was no way that her A+ was nearly as exciting as everything her older siblings had accomplished.  Ruby hadn’t even been accepted into private school yet so her A+ wasn’t as good as the ones the triplets brought home every day.

“Now what did you want to tell us?” Ori asked her youngest with a smile.

“Oh, nothing,” Ruby replied.  “I’m going to go work on my homework.”

She didn’t see her parents exchange a glance as she left the room.

*****

“Hey squirt!  What’s up?” Ruby’s part-alien half-brother, Teg, asked when she passed him on her way upstairs.

“Nothing,” Ruby replied, dejectedly.

“Doesn’t sound like nothing.  What’s the matter?”

“I got an A+ at school today.”

“Well that’s great!”

“Yeah.  Except Mom and Dad don’t care.  They were too busy listening to all the great things Pixie, Palmer, and Polly did today.”

“Did you actually tell them you got an A+?”

“No.”

“You should.  Trust me, I know it’s hard to live with the triplets.  I mean I have to go to class with them every day.  But Mom and Dad will be just as excited about your A+ as they are about the triplets’ accomplishments.”

“I doubt it,” Ruby replied as she continued into her room.

*****

A little while later, Ori knocked on Ruby’s door.  “Can I come in?” she called.

“Yeah,” Ruby replied.

“How is your homework coming?” Ori asked as she walked over to Ruby’s desk.

“Fine.  I’m almost done.”

“Good job!” Ori said.

“Yeah.”

“What’s the matter, honey?” Ori asked.

“Nothing.”

“It doesn’t seem like nothing.  What did you want to tell me and your father earlier?”

Ruby silently handed the report card over.  Ori opened it and scanned the contents.

“You got an A+?”

“Yeah.”

“Well that’s great honey!  Good job!”

“It’s not as good as earning lots of money or scholarships…” Ruby mumbled.

“Of course it is!” Ori said, ruffling Ruby’s hair.  “We’re proud of all of you.”

“You are?” Ruby asked.

“Yes,” Ori replied.  “Always.”

“Okay,” Ruby said, smiling again as Ori pulled her in for a hug.
