Gardening Papparazzi

I'm still catching up with stuff that happened on Friday (and some that happened Saturday).

Before work, I met Witrud's parents who flew in from Germany for her graduation on Sunday. Wiltrud and Jason (courtyard neighbors) were showing her parents the seedlings I had given them. Then they started speaking to me. Next thing I know, they're all speaking in German. At least they speak with understandable inflection. Yadda, yadda, yadda, pansies? Then they paused and pointed at a flower box. I look over, smile, and say, "Yes, those are pansies."

I went back to my garden and Wiltrud and her mom followed. They seemed a little interested in my red teepee and what I have been growing early. Wiltrud's dad showed up shortly. He seemed interested too. Then I learned from Wiltrud that my winter growing spinach was bolting. Bit of a bummer.

That day at work, I got to take home an earthbox Cappy made for me! I traded him 4 basil seedlings and 1 basil in an eggshell for it. On Saturday, while I was out volunteering cleaning at Jana's school, Jason and his father came over to the garden and spoke with Michael. Um, Jason's dad ran back for his camera and apparently took a lot of pictures of my new earthbox, my gro-pole and my red teepee.

Jason and his parents are from Arkansas and they have 3/4 acre of land. I would guess that Jason's dad is a very experienced gardener so I'm feeling super flattered that they seemed excited over my sci-fi urban farming. (Side note: Although from Arkansas, Jason is fluent in German.) Jason's dad was also interested in the teepee. He told Michael, "I've been interested in all of these, but this is the first time I've seen them in person. I've only seen these in catalogs." When he asked Michael what we were planning on putting in our earthbox, Michael was able to answer! Cucumbers! We had that discussion Friday night as I showed him all the work Cappy did.

Michael isn't really interested in gardening, but he seemed interested when he saw the earthbox. He's a cuke nut. And he got reinforcement later from Jason's dad who believes that the earthbox is perfect for those in the cucurbit family.

And late Friday night, I opened my package from Gurney's. My order of 3 dwarf citrus trees: Lemon, Lime and Orange. I was a little disappointed that this particular order, the pots/plugs were not wrapped in plastic and the poor orange tree soil all spilled out. I got to see that these were all grafts with pretty good roots at least. Hmm, Michael seemed interested...again. :)
