We've been talking about doing something about our kitchen on and off for about 5 years now. I guess I'm officially tired of the 20" little range and oven and dealing with its inconsistencies. Last weekend, I came across Ikea's Home Planning Tools and had some fun planning a new kitchen. Mid-week, I called a contractor we know from last year to stop by today for his thoughts. We're pretty open to suggestions as well. Since we've been thinking about this on and off, we've gone through several drawings, considered corner sinks, 20" dishwashers and removing a wall.
Here's what we have currently, roughly an 8'x11' kitchen with a tiny gap to the door to the basement/laundry. The shelf unit is really supposed to be about 3' high and 17"x30", but had difficulty representing it with Ikea's tools.
And here's the new consideration...
The fridge is shifted 90 degrees, we get a full-size range in with a microwave wall cabinet above. We'll actually lose some counter space, but I tried to adjust by adding the kitchen cart. We do gain quite a bit more storage space and hopefully, give ourselves more traffic space. The cabinet by the window changes to allow more natural light, and we raise the wall cabinets to allow for magnetic strips for keeping knives. We do switch from 30" to 39" cabinets.
Still no dishwasher; I think I'm okay with that. I'd rather keep a 24" sink bowl than to shrink it for a corner sink bowl. This is our second comprehensive drawing, but this is also closer to actually getting it done. Laugh, we'll see.
