I had a worm bin I started over the summer, but it got infested by fruit flies. I hate fruit flies. I finally got to attend a Pennsylvania Resource Council class on vermicomposting, and it was worthwhile!
Regarding fruit flies, they're apparently easy to avoid, but difficult to remedy. Eggs are in the skin of fruit. Part of me wishes I didn't learn that though, but it explains a little bit how the fruit flies got in my bin in the first place.
Tips to avoid them:
- really bury fruits and don't let any piece of fruit be exposed to air
- either freeze or microwave fruit scraps to kill 'em before tossing into the worm bin
Here are some photos from class tonight. Michael worked through the evening so I took Jana with me.
Jana helping me to shred newspaper for bedding. She actually paid attention to the presentation and surprised me by repeating some of the points in building the bin and how to care for the worms. She did ask me, "Why do worms need a bed?"
We were in line behind this mom and little boy, just 3 days older than Jana. This line was for getting our 2 scoops of worms with dirt.
Jana was excited to watch the worms. She wanted to pet them and hold one. She does do better than I do with these little guys.
