"In the court of birds, the bug never wins his case"

Jason told me he replaced the school mascot with a bunch of neon roses. The friend who helped him was promptly prosecuted and given a life sentence. "I need your help so they don't find me," he said.

It started as a simple prank: break in, replace the mascot with roses, plug them in. Then at night, hook the other end up to a PA, and from a club far away, broadcast lullabies sung live. Everyone was fine with the prank, thought it was kind of funny, and would've let it slip by if no-one made that phone call.

But someone did: Bernice, an ex-slave who, 40 years prior had killed a negro boy. She was in the fields with her bow and arrow, wearing a white mask. She took the mask off, but her face was painted a powdery white she could not rub off. She was 10 at the time. The little boy was 7, and his face was also covered in chalk. He ran out shouting "Don't shoot! Don't shoot!"

He was shot in the back. Collapsed. She stood above him and, at once, realized he wasn't Woodie at all, but only looked like him. The boy said: "Your mother is dead,"

In the courtroom, they asked Bernice what her favorite color was. Magenta, she said, recalling her Mama's dress blooming like a flower in the grass. magenta
