Well-- after many weeks of anticipation and a sleepless, nerve- filled night-- I have finally started band. Today was my second day, and it was the first day of marching. I must say, I think I'm enjoying it.
The marching commands and style are quite different from the ones at Eastwood. Or-- at least-- the ones I knew at Eastwood (I'm not sure how they're doing it now). I was just doing some of the stationary stuff they taught us today, and I've forgoten most of it; but I'm sure I'll remember tomorrow, just in the nick of time when I see how everybody else does it. My verdict: A world without "hit"s is very awkward and complicated, indeed.
I like playing piccolo in this band. There are like five others, and there's a whole army of brass and percussion for me to get lost in. I don't feel scared to play, like I did in high school. I was always so afraid someone would hear me and that I'd make a mistake; but here, I don't think anyone will notice if I play Hot Crossed Buns durring the fight song. It's great. This newfound confidence has worked wonders on my picc. skills; I never knew I could hold out these long notes.
The music is really fun to play, too. It's the difficulty level of a slightly tricky trooperette peice, but it's refreshing. I guess because it's all brand new. I even like the fight song (I know-- I say that NOW...).
Just one thing irks me. Today in sectionals we talked about our flute shirts and what they will look like. There were three suggestions:
1)Flute Loopes, complete with a blue and orange toucan sam
2)Band Nerd Mafia (courtesy of Ceci and Amy)
3)Front: Do YOU Blow? Back: We Do. [then below it: UTEP Flutes and Piccs.] {It figures, the gay guy came up with that one}
I DON'T WANT TO WEAR THE THIRD ONE!!!!!!! It's just like the ones the drumline pervs wear. Urgh. Don't want to act like a child... but don't want to act like idiotic, immature, sex-crazed "adult". For a moment there, I thought I was conflicted. But now I see reason. I pick option 1 or 2.
Here's to hoping tomorrow's practice is cloudy and breezy. And that I can memorize my pre- game music before monday.
Ta!
