so im flipping through channels the other day and the news is doing this segment on this one PBS show "Postcards from Buster". for those of you who dont know (because i didnt either) Buster Baxter is the bunny rabbit from the other PBS show, "Arthur". In the Arthur series Buster travels all over the world with his father, and recently PBS network started up "Postcards" which features only the rabbit and the people and places that he encounters on his travels. He travels all over the world and visits new countries and different people, and then records it all and sends back his discoveries to his friends on the Arthur show.
ill get to the point.
Recently there was a part in the show where Buster went to a home on the east coast to visit the kids there. In this particular home, however, the kid Buster was visiting was raised by a lesbian couple. Two mommies, as the show put it. The idea of growing up with gay parents was not a big part of the show, nor the main focus, nor deliberatley placed in the segment to encourage the idea of being pro-gay rights. it was a four second segment where they introduced the kid and the kid's mothers, and the kid's pet dog.
But two weeks before the show was set to air on TV, someone somewhere who was hot shit on the network or someone with alot of money threw a fit about the idea of showing a gay couple on a children's program. they said something about it being inappropriate and rediculous, saying that it wasnt an accurate portrayal of a modern american home. after much fuss the particular show was pulled from the network.
what kind of fucking people run our country. thats like saying any minority that is part of an american home is not normal or accurate. beacsue clearly, black or jewish or hispanic people are not fit to be part of the idea of american normalcy. i hate to break it to you narrow-minded folks, but gays and lesbians are REAL. they exist. and theyre not going anywhwere anytime soon. also hate to break it to you, but did you know that gays and lesbians are just like other people? did you know that they own houses and vote and have careers? and some of them... just some of them... want kids, just like the straight community.
who are you to judge what part of reality your viewer's children get exposed to? the idea of being gay needs to stop being portrayed as something dirty and wrong. because let me tell you, mr hot shit, that the chances of your kids living an "alternative lifestyle" are not uncommonly low. get over whatever you were taught about this issue. grow up.
thoughts?
