Did some light driving today, only about 200 miles. There was a lot to see today.
I visited Andersonville, Georgia today. Sight of the notorious Civil War prison. It was really amazing, the morbid feeling surrounding this place is easily felt. If you are a fan of history or of the Civil War this is a must see. The little stream that supplied the water for the prison still runs much the same way it does today. The recreation of the fort walls, the layout and dimensions marked by posts, the graves on site, tens of thousands.
Andersonville is a National Park and on the grounds, attached to the visitor center they have the National POW Museum. Wow, what an impact this has if you take the time to soak in all the information presented. Again, amazing.
Left Andersonville and headed east to Plains, Georgia. I'm sure everyone knows that Plains is famous for, peanuts and Presidents! The home of President Jimmy Carter and he still lives in the small town. And talk about small town, main street was about a block long, with closed up store fronts on one side, about 17 parking spots and a railroad track on the other side. The area surrounded by either a HUGE peanut farm or many smaller ones, guessing a huge one because there was one processing plant at the end of "town". The President's old high school, graduating class of 35, is now a Presidential museum and was very interesting to go through. Saw a short film where the President and his wife walked you through their house, you can not tour it because they still live there. I was amazed to find out he has written 35 books, I thought maybe 4. I bought two, lol. Was also happy but not surprised to hear him say what a voracious reader he is and how Amy (his daughter) is even worse. They had to build a new garage because books had taken over the garage attached to the house. By the way, President Carter and his wife still live in the same house they first built when they were married, it's the only house they've lived in as adults. I think that is so cool.
Left Plains and headed to Warm Springs, Georgia. This is where President Franklin Roosevelt used to go for relief of the pain he felt from the damage of polio. He soaked the the warm springs and set up a camp there. Many called it "the little White House" because he spent so much time there. This is where he died, with his mistress. It was dark and raining, the visitor center was closed and when I hit the park everything was shut down. the warm springs soaking pool was drained because of wall damage. So, I marked it off my "places to see" and moved northward towards Chattanooga, TN. Stopped about an hour up the road.
Spent the night chillin and watching movies at the hotel. Read a lot of my Edgar Cayce book, watched "The Sum of All Fears" and "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon". I was up until 4 a.m. - ugh.
Today took another $48 in gas, the hotel was $62 and food ran me $7.50 and all the tours were free. not too bad.
