Dear People In General,
I'd like to first start off by saying that if one more person says 'you're lucky to have a job', or 'just be glad you have a job' to me, in reference to my complaints about my said job...I will not be responsible for my own actions. It is not some grand privilege to have a job. It is not an honor to spend 10hours a day working for someone else to make money while I struggle to make my own ends meet. Saying 'I should be happy to have a job' because the economy is currently down, is akin to telling someone with claustrophobia 'at least you're not in a closet right now'. I currently feel trapped, if I leave my job in hopes that a new job will be better...I stand to be looking at the world crumbling under me if the new place goes under. However my job has flat-out stated that due to the shitty economy there will be no raises until further notice (read 'you're lucky to even have a job so don't bother asking for more money'). Now, if I was paid anywhere near what I think I should be, my griping would be at a minimal...however, I have discovered time and time again that while I am expected to do my duties far and above what my job description actually calls for...I am one of the lowest paid people with my qualifications. To expound on that, as someone who has worked with a mostly clean record (I've been late a time or two) for 3 1/2 years and to be paid LESS than someone who was hired less than 2 months ago is completely unacceptable....more to the point to be paid up to (no, I'm not exaggerating) two dollars less than people who are new hires AND do not have culinary degrees is so beyond disheartening that I have no words to explain it. So...in closing, while I understand the sentiment that comes with saying 'you should be glad...'...understand my situation, and my frustration and attempt to ponder if you, stuck in my shoes, would be merely content to have a job. Somehow I thought you wouldn't be.
Sincerly
