Be aware: The Forbidden Kingdom is unapologetic big-budget chopsocky. It's based on Chinese legends, which of course have a target emotional-complexity age of about six and are chocka with inexplicable, pointless or discontinuous plot devices; but that said, it's marvellous. The kung fu is nonpareil, Chan's speciality - comedic martial arts - gets full throttle and free rein, and the combination of slapstick, gentle comedy and awesome fight choreography more than makes up for the obligatory gormless sponge-lipped whitebread protagonist (whoever he is; Hollyweird seems to have an endless supply of plug-ugly American Pie cast lookalikes) and hot but acting-ability-free martial arts babes. And FFS it's MONKEY!!! Eeeee!
