First preview screening of 2012 and unfortunately not off to a good start. Going to try and start writing these semi-regularly again as I expect writing to be a big part of my life this year.

So...

Through out my primary and secondary education I studied some popular works of classic literature which are considered to be essential reading material  ( Read more... )

I completely understand where you're coming from but it sounds to me more a direction problem than anything else. First of all directed and starring Ralph Fiennes? That just screams self indulgent to me. We all know, especially in the last few years, how big a self involved fan of himself Ralph Fiennes actually is. I know you are reviewing a movie and not the person but when he's trying to make some epic Shakespearean Oscar-bait it's hard not to judge the man.

Also it's not a new idea it was done in the late 90's with "Romeo and Juliet" which starred Leonardo Dicaprio and Claire Danes. They also set the story in a modern setting with guns replacing the swords of the story. In my opinion it was a fantastic movie with The Montague and Capulet feud being a gang war an inspired touch. I, too am not too familiar "The Bards" works but that movie never dragged and had me engaged from the word go. So I don't think it's the script that could have brought it down.

Now obviously I haven't seen Coriolanus yet, but knowing you I trust your opinion over many other reviews I would see elsewhere. So I'll no doubt avoid this. But if you haven't already, check out Romeo and Juliet it's modernised version of Shakespeare with the original dialogue done very well in my opinion

Joe... you had me at Clare Danes (who coincidentally, the chick that plays Corolianus' wife looks an awful lot like)! ;)
