Songs I Like

May 01, 2008 17:06

Wow, these Thursdays keep rolling around quickly.

A pinch and a punch for the first of the month! How can it be May already!?

I don't think I really knew any Rufus Wainwright stuff before I heard him on the soundtrack to The Aviator, doing an old Gershwin tune. I have a bit of a thing for 1920s and 30s jazz (and musicals) so I fell in love with this song and with Wainwright's voice.

It's such a great song, filled with jazz violin and lyrics about learning to dance. Building a stairway to paradise is done by learning "a new step every day".

It wasn't until last year, after hearing "Going to a Town" on the radio, that I decided to buy his album, Release the Stars. This song is vastly different to the cheery number above. It is beautifully melancholy and speaks of his dissatisfaction with life and politics in America.

His music is hard to describe. It's quite a complex mix of pop and classical. Lots of piano and string arrangements. He's got a sexy voice, though. I can tell you that much. Or, as one eloquent YouTube commenter puts it:

Holy fuck, I could fucking fuck his voice!
No offense guys, I just got really aroused :$

LOL. :)

And here's a smh article about him from last year.
