penelly's 2007 cultural consumption (or, "Yay for Lists!")

Dec 24, 2007 22:53

Yeah, I often keep a list of these things because I like to look back and remember particular outings or fillums I liked. And because I'm a nerd. ;)

Films I saw:

~ Marie Antoinette
~ Miss Potter
~ Becoming Jane
~ Noise
~ The Lives of Others
~ Pirates III
~ Ocean's 13
~ Harry Potter, deathly hallows
~ The Simpsons Movie
~ The Home Song Stories
~ Elizabeth: The Golden Age (saw it in Oxford with Sasha)

My favourites were Noise and The Home Song Stories - both very good and very disturbing, and both Australian - so yay! :) The Lives of Others was also awesome and I would recommend it. All the others were enjoyable for various reasons, none of which I will go into now.

DVDs I watched:

~ Wrong Man
~ Kenny
~ The Weather Man
~ Little Miss Sunshine
~ Undead
~ Clerks II
~ Thank You for Smoking
~ Babel
~ Layer Cake
~ Barton Fink
~ Beyond the Sea
~ Look Both Ways
~ Bettie Page
~ Peaches
~ Secretary (again)

My faves out of that lot were, again, probably the Australian ones. I love Australian film. Kenny was hilarious. And I loved Look Both Ways and Peaches for their down-to-earthness and great characters. Many points also go to Little Miss Sunshine which was a beautiful, heartwarming and incredibly funny.

CDs purchased:

~ Ben Kweller, self-titled.
~ The Shins, Wincing the Night Away
~ The Decemberists, The Crane Wife
~ New Buffalo, The Last Beautiful Day
~ Sarah Blasko, What the Sea Wants the Sea will Have*
~ Regina Spektor, Begin to Hope*
~ Angus + Julia Stone, Chocolate & Cigarettes; Heart Full of Wine
~ Rufus Wainwright, Release the Stars
~ Bertie Blackman, Black

* ok, so I didn't buy these. Sasha did. But I listened to them a lot. :P

CDs purchased whilst overseas:

~ The Pipettes, We Are the Pipettes (been wanting to get for ages)
~ Feist, Let it Die (ditto - found both in Bleeker Street Records in NY for cheap)

~ Sto zvířat, Rozptýlení pro pozůstalé
~ Tleskac, Ska Z Ceska

These last two are Czech ska bands. I found the cds in Prague after hearing one of them playing at the Czech Inn hostel. The nice woman behind the bar wrote down the band name for me ("Sto Zvirat" - I think she said it means 100 Animals) and recommended a few others. I am yet to translate any of their lyrics, or song titles for that matter. They are fun (and rockin') souvenirs. :) :)

Gigs attended:

~ Farewell Candle Records - featuring: girls from The Clouds, The Lucksmiths and a bunch of others.
~ Augie March (finally saw them live!) with Holly Throsby
~ Bitchslap and others, late one night at the Lansdowne
~ The Great Escape festival!!!! Too many to name but it was an awesome weekend.
~ Sarah Blasko
~ Ladyfest hiphop gig the Sando. Was really fun.
~ Peabody @ Sando
~ The Shins @ Enmore Theatre
~ The Dandy Warhols - @ the Electric Ballroom in London!!!! :D

Other cultural events:

~ Opera in the Domain - Turandot
~ Keating - The Musical
~ A Midsummer Night's Dream, Sydney Theatre.

Books read:

~ The Penelopiad, Margaret Atwood
~ One Good Turn, Kate Atkinson
~ The Unknown Terrorist, Richard Flanagan

and then on my trip I read more novels than throughout the whole year:

~ High Fidelity, Nick Hornby
~ Goodnight Nobody, Jennifer Weiner (found in a hostel with a bookcrossing sticker)
~ The Buddha of Suburbia, Hanif Kureishi
~ The Birth of Venus, Sarah Dunant (book exchange at a hostel, and it's great because it's set during renaissance in Florence, and I know some of the art works and places mentioned because I went there on the trip!)

Phew, that took longer than expected. Now I better get to bed before santa and the reindeer arrive! :)
