Summer in Wisconsin can be oppressively muggy and overrun by mosquitos, ferociously stormy, blisteringly hot and dry (see: all of last year), or warm, sunny, breezy, and fresh. Today fell into that last category.
I live with two grad students with whom I get on extremely well, but one of them (M) is moving out in August. The other (R) is having a birthday this week. This morning I slept in, though not late, and came downstairs to help prepare a birthday brunch for her, which we ate in the backyard with small group of friends. The food was delicious, and we sat around for ages finishing it off before R and I had to leave for a show. Some of my coworkers were in a local community theater production of Les Miserables, and it was absolutely stunning. Definitely professional quality in all the lead roles and the chorus. (The violins were slightly out of tune, but that was pretty much the only thing that was sub-par.) Valjean and Javert in particular were impressive, and the big ensemble pieces were very effective.
On the way back we stopped for some new kitchen things and got a phone call from our prospective new housemate to confirm that she'd be signing the lease. I've only met her once, but she seems lovely--likes to cook and bake and read and knit and was fun to talk to, and on top of it she was far better able to articulate what she wanted in a living situation than the others we spoke with, which I appreciated.
Came home after that with R, both of us very hungry, so I made a salad (delicious, I've been tweaking it for a while and will have to share it here at some point) and she did something tasty with couscous, so we sat outside with a beer and music for a while. Then inside to do a lot of necessary housework, and when we decided it was time for ice cream we realized we had nothing to put on it, so I whipped up some salted caramel while she finished up the dishes. We have a little of it left and i'm doing my level best not to drink it straight out of the jar.
She just headed out to her girlfriend's, and I have the house to myself for the evening. Should probably finish the other half of the kitchen and practice my cello, and I was really looking forward to writing today, but honestly I'm so happily tired and this couch is so comfortable that I may just sit here and watch TV until I go to bed.
Good day.
