DUDE! On Tuesday I'm going to do an organic workup (ethyl acetate, sep funnel work, sodium sulfate drying agent, rotovapping) on some stuff that I made IN A BUG. I'm going to throw some ethyl acetate into a bacterial culture I made to see if it made the natural product analog I wanted it to make. Using the same lab techniques that I use in organic synthesis. This is sweet.
All of my lab techniques I've learned over the past few years are useful.
Then I'll do an LC-MS to see if I made the stuff.
I'm doing all this microbiology (bacterial culture, mainly) and molecular biology work learning how to do conjugations, extracting plasmid DNA, putting the right antibiotics to selectively grow strains, etc. And then I'm making shit. And detecting it by MS and (if the fermentation can be scaled up enough) possibly NMR.
